T'Mershi Duween - Frank Zappa ---------------------------------------------- transcribed by Howard Wright hakwright (at) gmail (dot) com h = hammer on p = pull off / = slide This tab should work pretty well for all versions of the song - but I was actually listening to the version on YCTDOSA Vol 2. Intro bit : ------------ E--------------------------------3---2-------------------- B-----------------------3---2--4---5------------------------ G--------------2---1--3---4---------------------------------- D-----2---1--3---4------------------------------------------ A---3---4------------------------------------------------- E------------------------------------------------------- This next bit is actually played on drums, xylophone and keyboard. If you're feeling adventurous you can play along too ! E-------8-8-----7-7-10--------8-8-----7-7-10--------- B---------------------------------------------------- G---7-7-----7-7-----------7-7-----7-7---------------- (repeat once) D---------------------------------------------------- A---------------------------------------------------- E---------------------------------------------------- The Tune ! ---------- E----------------------------------------12--12-------------- B---12h13-13-15-13p12-13p12---------------------15-13-15-15-- G---------------------------14p12-14-14---------------------- D------------------------------------------------------------ A------------------------------------------------------------ E------------------------------------------------------------ repeat above line three times, then : E------------------------------------------------------- B---12--12---------------------------------------------- G----------14p12-14-14---------------------------------- D------------------------------------------------------- A------------------------------------------------------- E------------------------------------------------------- You can actually try a slightly different fingering for those bits - it might suit you better. You could try this instead : E----------------------------------------12--12p10----10-10-- B---12h13-13-15-13p12-13p12------------------------13-------- G---------------------------14p12-14-14---------------------- (3 times) D------------------------------------------------------------ A------------------------------------------------------------ E------------------------------------------------------------ E---------------------------------------------------- B--12-12/10p8-10-10------------------------------------ G----------------------------------------------------- D------------------------------------------------------ A------------ E----------- Same notes - slightly different fret positions. That's really it as far as the 'themes' of the piece go. The tune bit usually repeats a few more times - and he often breaks up the first bit of the tune into two, putting a kind of 'disco' bass line in the gap, so it goes : E--------------------------------------- B---12h13-13-15-13p12-13p12------------- G---------------------------14p12-14-14- D--------------------------------------- A--------------------------------------- E--------------------------------------- insert descending octave bass line - do a slow count of 5 then : E---12--12--------------- B-----------15-13-15-15-- G------------------------ D------------------------ A------------------------ E------------------------ (more bass - count to 5) and repeat a few times. Another variation is where he gets bass and drums to do a fast march kind of beat : one TWO one TWO one TWO one TWO .... And the tune is played over this. You have to squeeze the first line of the tune into the space of 6 'one TWO's - you do this 3 times, then you break out of the beat on the last phrase of the tune. Listen to the record and you'll see what I mean. Now get practising ! Howard
