Daddy Don't Live in that New York City No More - Steely Dan ------------------------------------------------------------ From the album "Katy Lied" Transcribed/arranged by Howard Wright hakwright (at) gmail (dot) com This very much a guitar-driven song, so the chords fit very naturally on the guitar. The chord shapes I've used are a composite of the main rhythm guitar parts, with a few tweaks to capture some keyboard (organ) features. I always used to play E9 shapes in the middle 8 section, but listening more closely there's definitely a 6/9 shape being used both times, so there's a subtle change here (b7 in the E9 shape is dropped to the 6th). The melody uses a b7 note at this point, so there is an interesting clash of bluesy b7 against the cooler 6/9 sound. One thing I found interesting about the second part of the melody line in the middle 8 ("He says I gotta see a joker...") is that the entire phrase (9 consecutive notes) is built on semitone steps. One for the Steely Dan trivia book perhaps... All chord shapes listed at the bottom. You could use a more standard Gmaj7 shape such as 3x443x but the sequence that leads to the C/F shape works best if the triad at the top of the Am7, Gmaj7 and C/F chords moves up gradually, which is why I went for these shapes. (xx5432 for Gmaj7 might also work). Where the Am7 is used in the chorus, you can include the top E string (fretted at the 5th fret), but in the sequence mentioned above I think it works better without including the top E string.
